How Does Remote Online Notarization Work?

When conducting remote online notarizations, all documents are completely digital, meaning there are no paper documents required in the process.

Signatures and notarial stamps are also electronic when notarizing documents online. The journal you use for RON will be electronic as well, referred to as an eJournal, or electronic journal.

Is Remote Online Notarization Safe and Secure?

Remote Online Notarization is a secure process because of the increased level of verification required.

There are 6 ways to verify identity with Remote Online Notarization.
RON puts security back in the signer's corner and even further into the notary's corner. Here's why:
  • Multiple Methods of ID Verification - The signer's identity is run through third-party identity verification software, which can include both Credential Analysis electronically confirming the authenticity of the Identification Card as well as KBA or Knowledge Based Authentication where the signer is asked a series of questions personal to them, thereby increasing the security to the notary and the signer.
  • Recorded Notarizations - The entire Remote Online Notarization process is recorded and stored for up to 10 years which provides another layer of protection.
  • Tamper Evident Documents - A digital certificate is added to the notarized document, making it tamper-evident. If any changes are made after the document is notarized, authorized parties will be able to see who, when, where, and what changes were made.

There are multiple methods of identity verification, most of which are completed using third-party technology software designed for verifying identities in a digital capacity so you can ensure the signer is exactly who they say they are even though you may not be in the same physical location.
