How to Become a Notary Field Inspector

Commercial field inspectors are hired to take photos and complete basic reports on properties, vehicles, and equipment for banks, insurance companies, and lenders. It’s one of the easiest services to add to your notary business — no special license required.

You can work locally, set your own schedule, and get paid per assignment. As a notary, offering field inspections is a great way to fill gaps between signings and create a new, consistent stream of income.

What Is a Field Inspector?

A field inspector refers to a professional responsible for inspecting and evaluating an asset's value. Mortgage lenders, banks, and insurance agencies hire these individuals to check and update them on the state of various collateral pieces of property. The inspectors provide these updates by sending written reports or photographs of the item in question. There are five main types of field inspections:
  • Residential property inspections
  • Commercial property inspections
  • Vehicle inspections
  • Mystery shopper inspections
  • Car transport inspections

How Do You Know if Being a Field Inspector Is Right for You?

If you are looking to become a field inspector, this flexible role can be completed independently, making it a great option if you want to work on your own terms. Becoming an independent field inspector is an opportunity open to anyone and can be an ideal choice for a notary looking for other ways to supplement their income. If you're interested in learning how to become a mortgage field inspector or another type of field inspector, you should first consider the following skills:
  • Attention to detail: As a field inspector, organizations will rely on you to evaluate assets and report your findings, including details such as signs of damage. You will need to be detail-oriented to provide accurate reports.
  • Communication skills: Communication skills are vital for completing written reports after an inspection. A field inspector must be able to explain their findings properly and in an easily understandable manner.
  • Time management: There could be specific deadlines for some inspections, so a field inspector must be able to send reports and required photographs on time.

How Much Money Does a Field Inspector Make?

The income you can earn as a notary providing field inspection services will vary depending on whether you work for a field inspection agency or independently. Field inspectors can make up to $100 per hour. For private companies, you can earn between $20 and $60 per inspection, whereas for commercial property inspections, you can make between $75 and $100.

Since they require minimal effort and take just a few minutes, exterior inspections may charge lower, between $5 and $15. You might be wondering how much does a field inspector make for different types of inspections. Interior inspections take longer, from 30 minutes to an hour, and can pay up to $150. Other opportunities to make more money exist, such as charging travel fees depending on the distance traveled. If you have the time, you can also stack up different inspections, taking up to 20 in a day, for instance, for higher income.
