What Is a Process Server?

A process server refers to someone who delivers legal documents to individuals or entities involved in a legal process or court case. They are expected to follow specific procedures to ensure the documents are delivered correctly.

As a process server, you receive the documents from the entity or individual initiating the legal action, such as an attorney or court. You then deliver the documents to the intended recipient, which could be a company or individual. Before you begin offering process serving services, check your specific state's laws and regulations for any requirements or guidelines and confirm that you meet the set criteria.

How Do I Know if Being a Process Server Is Right for Me?

Anybody can take up a process server role if they are willing to put in the time and effort required. It's a great opportunity for a notary to make more money and diversify their business. Here are some factors to consider when deciding if becoming a process server is right for you:
  • Communication skills: Effective communication is essential for interacting with the recipients they're serving to inform them what the documents are.
  • Attention to detail: Process servers must ensure they provide accurate reports of their delivery process and any challenges they may face when serving legal documents.
  • Driving skills: A process server will have to deliver documents to different locations, some of which may be far out. Driving will help with efficiency.
  • Flexibility: The hours a process server works are not fixed, so flexibility is required. Some jobs can open up unexpectedly, and servers need to be ready to complete them to avoid delays.

How Much Can a Process Server Make?

As a notary public, you can earn from $60 to $100 per process serving appointment. Additionally, since you are required to travel to deliver the documents, you can charge a travel fee. Travel fees vary on distance and what is agreed upon between you and your client.

A process server's income may vary depending on various aspects, such as:
  • Location: The area you're in can determine how much clients are willing to pay for process serving.
  • Type of service: Some services, such as delivering legal documents outside of regular business hours or rush orders, can increase earning potential.
  • Experience: If you have experience or are well-known as a process server, you can command higher rates.
