Notaries can generate revenue from numerous sources. Understanding the qualifications that your training and certifications grant you will allow you to maximize your earnings. A public notary can perform jobs that fall into two categories, those being general notary work and non-notary services. There is also a third category, notary loan signings, that is available to notaries who receive specialized training and pass exams. 

What Can You Do as a Notary Public?

A notary public can perform general notary jobs and some non-notary services. Some roles a typical notary can accept include:

How Does a Notary Signing Agent Differ From a Notary Public? 

While a notary public can complete jobs that fall under two categories, a third category is available exclusively to notary signing agents (NSAs). The difference between an NSA and a notary public is that the NSA has undergone training and passed examinations to qualify for loan notary jobs.

The ability to notarize loan documents allows NSAs to accept more jobs and earn more revenue for their work. An NSA can charge $75-$200 as a loan signing fee, depending on the escrow company's limit. That revenue comes from an appointment that can take as little as one hour.

As an Apostille Agent, the cost of your services is based on how quickly the client needs their documents returned. You can make up to $150 per apostille and tier your services by offering additional features such as express delivery or rush turnaround in exchange for an increased rate.

#4: Become a Field Inspector   

Field inspections can be a great source of additional income

As a field inspector, you'll be responsible for providing photos and written or digital reports to contracted companies on the condition, location, and security of land, property, or vehicles.

You may find yourself conducting damage assessments of vehicles that have been in accidents for insurance companies, verifying the location of collateral for loan companies, and inspecting homes for security reasons. 

Depending on the type of service, you can earn up to $70 per field inspection!

​Process servers can make anywhere between $45 and $100 per assignment, with additional fees for rush orders or serving papers outside of regular business hours, making it a profitable addition to any notary business.

#10: ​Assisting Estate Planning Attorneys

Notaries play a key role in assisting estate planning attorneys by providing important notarization services and can make some extra cash at the same time. 

In this role, you'll be responsible for helping attorneys prepare estate-planning documents and ensure that all filing requirements are met before submitting a trust application or will package — all while making sure everything is legally sound. 

Depending on your state's notary fee laws, you can potentially make up to $90 for an average estate planning job. With minimal expenses such as gas reimbursed, offering this service could benefit you if you want to add a flexible service to your business.

As a notary who offers mobile finger printing, you are providing a valuable service to customers by taking their fingerprints electronically in any location.

Fingerprinting services typically have a base fee of around $50 as well as extra costs for travel and transmitting the fingerprints to a specialist. In certain locations such as Florida, you can earn up to $120 per fingerprinting appointment.
