From remote online notarizations (RON) to assisting trust attorneys, there are plenty of ways for signing agents to make money and supplement their income with more than just loan signings. 

In this article, I'm going to share a dozen different ways that can help you make money so you can get started on diversifying your income in your notary business today!

#1: Work as a Remote Online Notary (RON)

Remote Online Notarization, or RON, is a great way to make money as a notary. 

With RON, you can notarize documents from the comfort and convenience of your own home!

Using an audio-visual technology called a RON platform, it's easier than ever before to provide secure and reliable notarial services to your customers from anywhere.

Not only does RON save time, but it also allows you to earn a steady income stream by offering cost-effective notarial services in a fully digital environment. 

#2: ​Become an Apostille Agent

Apostilles specialize in certifying legal documents such as birth certificates and marriage licenses that are validated from government entities to be used in other countries. 

With knowledge of the rules and regulations that apply in different countries, apostille agents make it easy for people to get their documents certified with minimal effort – and can earn good money at the same time. 

This process can be complicated, which is why many turn to apostille agents for assistance.

As an Apostille Agent, the cost of your services is based on how quickly the client needs their documents returned. You can make up to $150 per apostille and tier your services by offering additional features such as express delivery or rush turnaround in exchange for an increased rate.

#3: Become a Field Inspector   

Field inspections can be a great source of additional income

As a field inspector, you'll be responsible for providing photos and written or digital reports to contracted companies on the condition, location, and security of land, property, or vehicles.

You may find yourself conducting damage assessments of vehicles that have been in accidents for insurance companies, verifying the location of collateral for loan companies, and inspecting homes for security reasons. 

Depending on the type of service, you can earn up to $70 per field inspection! 

In this job, you'll be playing an important role in helping your clients make informed decisions about the properties in their care.

#4: Work as a Permit Runner

If you're a notary looking to expand your services so you can earn extra income in your business, permit running is a great addition!

This job involves helping individuals obtain the permits they need for their business or personal use and staying up-to-date on state permitting laws and processes. 

Contractors are often willing to hire permit runners over taking care of the tedious work themselves, allowing them to get projects done quicker and smoother. 

As a notary doing permit running services, you can earn up to $150 per appointment.

#5: Become a Wedding Officiant

Becoming a wedding officiant is a great way to make money. 

In six states, Montana, Maine, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, and Nevada you can start working as a wedding officiant right away without having to be ordained. 

Depending on your services offered, wedding officiants can charge anywhere from $100-$250 per wedding. 

#6: Earning Income with Advanced Healthcare Notarizations

Working as a notary in advanced healthcare can be extremely rewarding.

Hospitals and hospices have begun to require an Advanced Care Directive before performing major surgeries or when a patient is facing terminal illness. 

This form allows you to assign someone to make decisions for you in the event that you cannot, as well as state your preference for treatments such as organ donation and life-sustaining care. 

There are also other forms that may need to be notarized in a healthcare setting such as Power of Attorneys. 

Depending on distance and need, notaries working in advanced healthcare can charge anywhere from $50 - $100 a session.

#7: Correctional Facility Notarizations

A correctional facility notarization is a specialized notary service that involves notarizing legal documents for incarcerated individuals.

As a notary who performs these services, you must first obtain your regular notary commission from the state and complete additional training requirements.

The fees for these services can vary but can range between $100 and $200 per assignment, with additional charges for being mobile and flat correctional fees that can significantly increase your earnings.

A process server is responsible for delivering legal documents to individuals or businesses as part of the legal process, ensuring everyone is properly notified and given the opportunity to respond.

Anyone can become a process server, but notary publics can add this as a service to generate more income.

​Process servers can make anywhere between $45 and $100 per assignment, with additional fees for rush orders or serving papers outside of regular business hours, making it a profitable addition to any notary business.

#9: ​Make Money Assisting Estate Planning Attorneys

Notaries play a key role in assisting estate planning attorneys by providing important notarization services and can make some extra cash at the same time. 

In this role, you'll be responsible for helping attorneys prepare estate-planning documents and ensure that all filing requirements are met before submitting a trust application or will package — all while making sure everything is legally sound. 

Depending on your state's notary fee laws, you can potentially make up to $90 for an average estate planning job. With minimal expenses such as gas reimbursed, offering this service could benefit you if you want to add a flexible service to your business.

As a notary who offers mobile finger printing, you are providing a valuable service to customers by taking their fingerprints electronically in any location. 

You are able to work for businesses such as realtors, contractors, foster parents, childcare facilities, and senior facilities that need employees to be fingerprinted.

Fingerprinting services typically have a base fee of around $50 as well as extra costs for travel and transmitting the fingerprints to a specialist. In certain locations such as Florida, you can earn up to $120 per fingerprinting appointment.

As a notary public, one way to make money is by offering I-9 form services.

These forms are used by employers to verify the identity and employment eligibility of new hires.

By becoming an authorized representative, notaries can complete Section 2 of the I-9 form for employers, ensuring compliance with federal law.

Offering I-9 form services can be a profitable addition to a notary business, as many employers need this service and are willing to pay for it.

One of the most lucrative ways to make money as a notary public is by becoming a loan signing agent.
