How to Avoid Catching a Cold or Flu

Steps to Take During an Appointment to Stop Viruses and Germs in their Tracks

Viruses and other germs are frequently transmitted by air or through surfaces. During an appointment, it's easy for germs to be transmitted UNLESS you actively take steps to prevent it.

Here are some steps you can take to reduce or eliminate transmission of viruses, bacteria, or other germs.

1) Wear Rubber Gloves During the Appointment (And Wash Your Hands)

Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is one of the top recommendations to prevent the spread of germs and viruses (such as Coronavirus).

However, sometimes it may not be possible to wash your hands immediately after interacting with a client. So one way to prevent your hands from being exposed to germs (and transferring those germs to your mouth, eyes, or other membrane) is to wear disposable gloves.

Wearing gloves can be effective in preventing passing viruses from your hand to your mouth if you wear them during the appointment and properly take them off without inadvertently touching your face or mouth. To be extra careful, you can follow these steps:
  1. In the car, sanitize hands and put on a fresh set of gloves
  2. Provide a set of disposable gloves to your clients upon arrival. To be extra careful, they could wash their hands and sanitize them before putting the gloves on.
  3. Do the signing
  4. Have them remove right glove for the thumbprint (You keep gloves on during this time)
  5. Rub a cleansing wipe on all of your notary tools (thumbad, pens, journal cover)
  6. Remove gloves after the signing, dispose of them, then wash your hands and/or apply sanitizer.

Many students have reported finding protective gloves at their local hardware store.

2) Wear a Mask to Inhibit the Transmission of Germs

As of this writing, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is now recommending that we wear cloth masks to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). When all parties in the meeting wear a mask, it can significantly reduce the amount of concentrated droplets of viruses and other germs spread by talking, sneezing, or coughing.

Types of Masks:

N95 Surgical Mask: The N95 Surgical Mask is designed to filter viruses. This mask protects both the wearer and those around him/her by inhibiting the amount of virus particles able to pass through it. It is highly recommended to delay acquiring this type of mask until sufficient supplies are available to the medical community.
Sanitary or Cloth Mask: You can wear a sanitary mask or make a makeshift mask out of cloth using a scarf, neck warmer, or other piece of clothing. This type of mask does not filter airborne viruses or bacteria but is effective in hindering the transmission of them on surfaces by capturing concentrated droplets of saliva containing those germs.

3) Wipe Down Surfaces, Pens, and Other Tools with Cleansing Wipes

After your appointment, wipe down pens, thumbprint ink pads, and other surfaces with a sanitary wipe. According to several health professionals, standard cleansers and cleaning wipes can be effective in removing most germs.

Many viruses (including Coronavirus) are more likely to be transmitted by surviving on smooth surfaces such as plastic, glass, and metal. Viruses may be less likely to survive extended periods of time and be transmitted on more porous surfaces such as paper.

*Always consider you and your family's health and follow the recommendations of the CDC and local, state, and federal government. See our full health disclosures and recommendations at the bottom of this page.
